Quarterly Update

May 6, 2020
April 2020
Unprecedented Times

With the beginning of a new decade we were all hoping for a positive start to the year with renewed confidence in the construction market. Then, on 11th March the World Health Organisation declared COVID-19 a pandemic, causing a huge impact on businesses, families and communities all around the world. As we all come to terms with what this means for our daily lives, we have all had to work collaboratively to manage the impact on our business and the day to day running of our office and work sites.

Focus Building Company have proactively worked with the MBA and using Government Health guidelines, introduced a number of new policies and guidelines crucial to preserving the day to day operations of the business, keeping the well-being of our staff and subcontractors at the heart of any decision. Whilst there is no immediate solution or vaccine to protect us from the virus our newly introduced policies, including working remotely and from home, have successfully maintained our support and workflow to our sites and we have seen a minimal impact on our productivity on site to date. Looking at our supply chain and working closely with our subcontractors and suppliers, we are monitoring closely the effects on delivery dates, particularly products from Europe and China and offering local suppliers as alternative to ensure our projects do not get delayed by the effects of COVID-19.

Newly Awarded

algoorlie Shopping Centre Redevelopment – Kalgoorlie
We are pleased to announce that the client, Kalgoorlie Projects Pty Ltd, have awarded the recently tendered Kalgoorlie Shopping Centre Redevelopment to Focus Building Company in early March 2020. Located in the regional City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the project involves the construction of a new Coles Supermarket and the additional creation of 8 new tenancies including the external refurbishment of the existing Target store. Other works include the complete upgrade of the existing car park together with a new dedicated car park for the Coles Store with new shade structures for the customer parking. We will be working alongside Oldfield Knott Architects who will also be managing the contract for the client. Our project team will be headed by Richard Williams as Project Manager and Site Manager Quentien Hickey who has relocated to Kalgoorlie. Work has already begun on site with the civil works. The works are due for completion in early April 2021.

Project Update

St Martins Centre Buildings – Perth
The St Martins team are taking advantage of the Covid-19 restrictions with the forced closure of occupied tenancies. Our Project Manager Ben Brown knows a window of opportunity when he sees one, ‘Making use of the COVID-19 quiet period to complete works in occupied zones gives us even more reassurance that we will complete these works on schedule’. He continued, ‘Notably, The C Restaurant is nearing completion with the dining area progressing well.’
The team are still carrying out night works which always present a challenge.

Penrhos College New Science Building – Como
The team at Penrhos College are actively carrying on with works for the school. Production is at a busy point with several subcontractors on site and our Site Manager Ken Fields currently overseeing the concrete pour for the third level. Next on the programme will be formwork for level 4 followed by concreting which is expected to be completed in the next fortnight for the team to commence structural steel works. Window frames are being installed on level 2 & 3 and the lift shaft is complete. This 4 storey upgrade will provide the college with a modern science centre ready to use at the beginning of the 2021 school year.

Scotch College New Teaching and Learning Building – Swanbourne
Focus Building Company are pleased to have successfully completed the Scotch College Teaching and Learning Building project in late March 20. It was a pleasure handing over this exceptional new building to the college. The project team of Richard Williams, Shaun Hughes, Dean Douglass and Steve Ebbrell worked tirelessly to the very end of the programme, polishing the fine points of this intricate, highly detailed build. Delivering this vastly specified, meticulous project has been nothing short of challenging, ‘Thanks to the project team for their efforts, the final product is one to be proud of’ Richard said.
The building boasts expansive open learning areas with top of the range technologies accessible for teachers and students of the college. An eye catching building in itself; the multiple different finishes throughout the interior and exterior of the Teaching and Learning Building are designed to capture the history and essence of the College.

Belmont Forum McDonalds Relocation - Belmont
Focus Building Company completed the demolition works early in March and have received excellent feedback from our very happy client. Ben Brown the Project Manager ensured the project for Perron Investments was carried out safely with the end result being the successful relocation of McDonald’s restaurant & drive-through.

The Square Mirrabooka Upgrade Zone B – Mirrabooka
Project Team Ben Brown and Steve Ebbrell worked together again on Zone B to proficiently deliver the Zone B works which were awarded upon a very successful completion of Zone A.
Zone B works consisted of demolition of four restaurants in the food court and amalgamating them into one tenancy for a proposed new restaurant. Once again the works at Mirrabooka were completed safely in February, on budget and on time and our client has asked us to carry out more works at the Centre.
